My own Idiolect

My Own Idiolect

As far as voicing goes my idiolect does'mt change drastically depending on the different situations that i am in however it does change enough so i can appropriate my voice to the situation that i am in. I would say that the features in my idiolect that would be considered quite common and would not be said to be extremely distinguishable from a large group of people but those who know me it is easily recognisable to them.
When i was younger my accent was a strong indication of where i came from, as my voice was developing i had picked up the 'Norfolk' accent from family and just my environment in general. As i got older and my voiced changed i found that the 'Norfolk' accent i was used to had sort of dissipated and wasn't as strong as it used to be however in certain words and phrases it is still recognisable, especially by those from this area. A prime example of my accent coming out is my missing out of the letter 't' in most words, especially where the letter is in the middle. Words such as 'petrol' become 'pe'rol' and 'lettuce' becomes 'le'ucce'.
With each situation depending on the formality i will attempt to correct my improper pronunciation, mainly for formal events where i must use upwards convergence where i must appropriate the features of my idiolect to suit those of a higher standing to myself. It will also move up in formality in a situation such as a job interview however i would be doing it more to present myself as a more sophisticated person and not necessarily to meet the other persons level of formality in their voice as they could have a relaxed and casual tone.

Conversational analysis

Conversational Analysis

There are many examples in the transcript that show spontaneous speech, frequent occurrences of fillers, repairs and . With fillers examples can be seen in line 15.
' I think i missed errrr the inside joke there'. With this being spontaneous, the 'errrr' relates to the confusion in the statement as they are not part of the inside joke and the curiosity in wanting to know what they were referring to. An example of a repair in the transcript would be on line 2.
' Is it...it's recording, i don't know if this is working, hello.' From this quote the opening words 'is it' is showing doubt and and uncertainty on whether the device is actually recording and this becomes an incomplete construction as the person realise that device is actually recording which shows the surprise in her speech and how she couldn't plan whether the device would record straight away. Another way in which we see interruptions and over laps frequently throughout the transcript, on line 6-8. The overlapping between Reece and Ellie are more to do with correcting one another as Ellie tries to express a statement that she is unsure about.
' What was it? Boatload off'. This incomplete structure also shows uncertainty in what is being said and with the interruption from Reece and overlapping her speech, to answer what she was saying, when Reece says.
'Boatload of danger'. Ellie soon after reiterates what is being said, mainly as an act to confirm what it was she was unsure about in the first place. Another example of spontaneity is throughout the transcript there is constant laughter from reacting to different types of situations, with regular occurrences throughout the transcript.

With the conversation we can see how it does follow certain procedures of conversation. With opening right at the start of the conversation on line 2.
'Hello'. This is more used as a way of opening up the conversation rather than an actual hello as it is more used to test whether the recording device is actually working or not. Regarding turn taking in the conversation, as it is only a relaxed and informal conversation, which also shows the spontaneous qualities of the conversation however from lines 20-27 there is a turn taking pattern as this section becomes more topic related and revolves around a more question and answer based conversation topic. In the conversation we can see Giles's theory of accommodation comes into it, as it is an informal conversation with people of the same background, mutual convergence takes place as everyone in the group has a similar tone and level of formality when addressing each other throughout the conversation. We can also see an example of when there is unbalance in Grice's maxims. From lines 11-17 an inside joke is referred to which only two of the people in the group understand, this breaks the rule of quantity and manner as what is being said is completely unclear to those who are not part of the joke and not enough is really being said for everyone to fully understand the entirety of the inside joke.

With who holds the power in the conversation there can be two possibilities for who has main control, it either being Abi or Ellie in main control. Examples of this is them being the two who dictate the topic of conversation. The main reason for Abi being in control as she has possession of the recording device and is in the centre of the conversation.

What's in a name?

Band names can have very different meanings, they can give a good representation of what the band are about and can tell people what to expect from them before they even listen, or some names can not really mean anything at all. This is most true in the Rock and Metal genre of music, with band names providing a clear indication of their sound. Bands such as 'Deep Purple' and 'Pink Floyd' have the use of colours in their names, but more lighter and this comes through in the musical styling of these bands who both fit into the category of 'Psychedelic Prog Rock', and the colours in the name came make this clear. Another example of how a colour in the name can help identify a bands style would be Black Sabbath, as the Black adds a sense of darkness and evil which are common themes in Black Sabbaths sound and their lyrics. A words lexical field can give a good indication of a bands style with the themes and motifs that we would normally associate with these words, Bands such as 'Dream Theater' and 'Muse' both employ names that gives of a euphoric and synth influenced style of music, words like Dream and Muse one can associate them with light tonality. Another example of how a words lexical field can help associate a genre with a band would be 'Placebo' and band name would be associated normally with drugs although placebo pills aren't technically drugs, but feeling that would normally be associated with a placebo pill as it adds a sense of deception and mystery to the bands style which is shown in their music. This is also clear in the band 'Blur', with a name associated with side effects of drug taking which links into the background of the band Blur who were part of the 90's 'Madchester' music scene where drug taking was extremely popular within that circle of people. So as well as musical styling, names can give us a history of the bands origins as well. With the more heavy metal bands their names can be clear indications of their styles, bands like 'Megadeth' and 'Metallica' are clear examples of this, Metallica being a sort of play in words of Metal can give a clear sign of heavy elements in their music and their association with metal, The same with Megadeth, the name which is actaully an alteration of the word 'Megadeath' which means the killing of more than a million people by the means of nuclear warfare, which adds themes of war, death which are common themes in Megadeth songs.
