Conversational analysis

Conversational Analysis

There are many examples in the transcript that show spontaneous speech, frequent occurrences of fillers, repairs and . With fillers examples can be seen in line 15.
' I think i missed errrr the inside joke there'. With this being spontaneous, the 'errrr' relates to the confusion in the statement as they are not part of the inside joke and the curiosity in wanting to know what they were referring to. An example of a repair in the transcript would be on line 2.
' Is it...it's recording, i don't know if this is working, hello.' From this quote the opening words 'is it' is showing doubt and and uncertainty on whether the device is actually recording and this becomes an incomplete construction as the person realise that device is actually recording which shows the surprise in her speech and how she couldn't plan whether the device would record straight away. Another way in which we see interruptions and over laps frequently throughout the transcript, on line 6-8. The overlapping between Reece and Ellie are more to do with correcting one another as Ellie tries to express a statement that she is unsure about.
' What was it? Boatload off'. This incomplete structure also shows uncertainty in what is being said and with the interruption from Reece and overlapping her speech, to answer what she was saying, when Reece says.
'Boatload of danger'. Ellie soon after reiterates what is being said, mainly as an act to confirm what it was she was unsure about in the first place. Another example of spontaneity is throughout the transcript there is constant laughter from reacting to different types of situations, with regular occurrences throughout the transcript.

With the conversation we can see how it does follow certain procedures of conversation. With opening right at the start of the conversation on line 2.
'Hello'. This is more used as a way of opening up the conversation rather than an actual hello as it is more used to test whether the recording device is actually working or not. Regarding turn taking in the conversation, as it is only a relaxed and informal conversation, which also shows the spontaneous qualities of the conversation however from lines 20-27 there is a turn taking pattern as this section becomes more topic related and revolves around a more question and answer based conversation topic. In the conversation we can see Giles's theory of accommodation comes into it, as it is an informal conversation with people of the same background, mutual convergence takes place as everyone in the group has a similar tone and level of formality when addressing each other throughout the conversation. We can also see an example of when there is unbalance in Grice's maxims. From lines 11-17 an inside joke is referred to which only two of the people in the group understand, this breaks the rule of quantity and manner as what is being said is completely unclear to those who are not part of the joke and not enough is really being said for everyone to fully understand the entirety of the inside joke.

With who holds the power in the conversation there can be two possibilities for who has main control, it either being Abi or Ellie in main control. Examples of this is them being the two who dictate the topic of conversation. The main reason for Abi being in control as she has possession of the recording device and is in the centre of the conversation.
